Award is given to the NHSO for its role in expanding one-day surgery services
The National Health Security Office (NHSO) received the award for the excellent health services fund for its role in improving people’s access to One Day Surgery (ODS) services.
The award was given during the national conference on One Day Surgery (ODS) and Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS) held by the Department of Medical Services under the Ministry of Public health in Bangkok Aug 18.
The event brought in experts and health providers across Thailand to discuss the development and improvement of ODS services.
Since 2018, the NHSO has included ODS in Universal Coverage Scheme (UCS) benefits package, resulting in the scheme beneficiaries receiving free ODS at hospitals regardless of their registry health units.
The evidence suggests that the ODS services increase patients’ access to quality care and improve the efficiency of health services as a whole.
During the conference opening, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health, Anutin Charnvirakul addressed the benefits of ODS, including reducing hospital crowding and patients’ admission days.
Patients can speed up overall recovery and return to normal life as they spend post-surgery recovery in their home environment and with family members or relatives.
The availability of ODS services has saved around 20,000 baht of medical expenses for each patient. Being aware of the service’s benefits, the Thai government allocates 20 million baht a year to the UCS to cover the cost of ODS.
Dr Kriddhiya Sriprasert, the NHSO’s Senior expert in healthcare fund management unit, represented the NHSO during the award-receiving ceremony.
“The NHSO has covered 76 types of ODS services, including the surgery for treating inguinal hernia, hemorrhoids, gallstone in pancreatic duct, ureter, and gallbladder etc.,” she said.
MIS is also covered under the UCS benefits package. 14 types of surgery are covered, Appendectomy, Hysterectomy, Colectomy, Excision, Sinus surgery, Sleeve Gastrectomy etc..
These types of surgery leave only small wounds. Patients can be recovered fast as they require to stay at hospitals no more than 24 hours after the surgery, said Dr Kriddhiya.
After discharge from a hospital, a patient will be monitored by a family doctor who provides care and medical consultation through telemedicine, collaborating with their family members and village health volunteers.
The NHSO plans to include more types and areas of ODS and MIS services in the following years.
