Launch of two new books unveiling the birth of UHC
The National Health Security Office (NHSO) has released two books that explore the origins of Thailand's Universal Health Coverage (UHC) from a historical standpoint.
The books were launched on January 25th during a side event at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference 2024, held at Centara Grand and Bangkok Convention Centre in Bangkok.
The book launch and panel discussion joined by notable health system experts, including Dr. Suwit Wibulpolprasert - Chairman of the Minister's Advisory Committee on Global Health, Ministry of Public Health; Professor Dr Goran Tomson, Co-Founder and Senior Adviser of the Swedish Institute for Global Health Transformation; and Dr Jadej Thammatacharee, Secretary-General of the National Health Security Office, and authors of the books Nattanee Satchanawakul and Napaphat Satchanawakul.
Dr. Jadej stated that the aim of producing and publishing the two books is to record and share Thailand's historical experiences and critical turning points in developing Universal Health Coverage with the hope that readers can understand the complexities involved and the various forces, including politics, economics and cultural at play in shaping the nation's healthcare system.
With 528 pages, the book titled "The Art of Establishing Universal Health Coverage in Thailand from the Past to Present, c.1868-2002, gives a comprehensive trajectory of the development of the Thai health system and the development of UHC starting from the reign of King Rama V (King Chulalongkorn) in 1868 leading up to the year 2002.
